Ingredients
- 1 large loaf of French or Italian Bread, day old if possible
- 8 large eggs*
- 3 1/2 cups milk or light cream*
- 1 cup sugar, divided
- 1 tbsp vanilla
- 3 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp nutmeg
- 6-8 medium sized McIntosh Apples*
- 1/4 stick butter*
- Maple syrup, for serving*
Directions
- Slice bread into 1 1/2" slices.
- Spray 9x13" glass pan with non-stick spray. Place bread in dish, placing tightly together.
- In a medium bowl, beat together eggs, 1/2 cup sugar, milk and vanilla. Pour half of mixture over bread.
- Peel, core and slice apples. Place them on top of bread to cover. Pour remaining wet mixture over apples.
- Mix remaining sugar (1/2 cup) with cinnamon and nutmeg and sprinkle on top. Dot with butter. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
- Next day, preheat oven to 350*F. Uncover dish and bake for 1 hour. Remove and allow to rest for 5-10 minutes. Cut into squares and serve warm with maple syrup.
