Cinnamon Apple Baked French Toast

The key to this dish is letting the mixture sit overnight in the fridge before baking, so plan to prepare the French Toast the day or night before.

Ingredients
  • 1 large loaf of French or Italian Bread, day old if possible
  • 8 large eggs*
  • 3 1/2 cups milk or light cream*
  • 1 cup sugar, divided
  • 1 tbsp vanilla
  • 3 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 6-8 medium sized McIntosh Apples*
  • 1/4 stick butter*
  • Maple syrup, for serving*

Directions
  1. Slice bread into 1 1/2" slices.
  2. Spray 9x13" glass pan with non-stick spray.  Place bread in dish, placing tightly together.
  3. In a medium bowl, beat together eggs, 1/2 cup sugar, milk and vanilla.  Pour half of mixture over bread.
  4. Peel, core and slice apples.  Place them on top of bread to cover.  Pour remaining wet mixture over apples.
  5. Mix remaining sugar (1/2 cup) with cinnamon and nutmeg and sprinkle on top.  Dot with butter.  Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  6. Next day, preheat oven to 350*F.  Uncover dish and bake for 1 hour.  Remove and allow to rest for 5-10 minutes.  Cut into squares and serve warm with maple syrup.
